Ingredients
- 1 cup Sesame seeds
- 2–4 Tbsp Neutral oil
- 1 pinch Fine salt
Method
- Toast the sesame seeds in a dry skillet over medium, stirring, until they smell nutty and turn one shade darker, 3–5 minutes. Do not let them blacken. Cool 5 minutes.
- Blend the seeds with 2 tablespoons of oil and a pinch of salt until smooth, stopping to scrape the bowl. Add oil a teaspoon at a time until it pours like thick cream. A few speckles are fine.
- Keep it covered in the refrigerator and stir before using. It is the first ingredient in Creamy Homemade Hummus.
Nutrition
Kitchen estimate only, not lab-verified. Almost entirely sesame and oil.
Guest diet / allergy swaps
Short kitchen notes for guests. A fuller gluten-free or dairy-free ingredient list, when we have one, is in the panels below.
Low-sodium friendly
Skip the salt. Toasted sesame is enough, especially if this tahini is going into a seasoned hummus.
Gluten-free style
Seeds and oil only. Check that the sesame seeds were not handled with wheat if that matters in your kitchen.
No sesame
There is no tahini without sesame. Choose a different sauce.
